Student Visa Subclass 500

International Student Work Rights & Regulations

Australia permits international students on subclass 500 visas to work while studying. This guide explains how the 48-hour fortnightly cap operates, how fortnights are calculated, and how to protect yourself from workplace underpayment.

Visa Condition 8105: Work Limitation

48 Hours / Fortnight

Primary student visa holders are restricted to working a maximum of 48 hours per fortnight while their course of study or training is in session.

How is a "Fortnight" Legally Defined?

Under Commonwealth migration regulations, a fortnight is defined specifically as a 14-day period starting on a Monday and ending on the second following Sunday.

Example: If you work 30 hours in Week 1, you can only work a maximum of 18 hours in Week 2 (30 + 18 = 48 hours total for that 14-day block).
When Hours Are Unrestricted (No Limit):
  • During scheduled university course breaks (e.g. summer and winter holidays between semesters).
  • Postgraduate research students (Masters by research or PhD candidates) once their course has commenced.
When You CANNOT Work:
  • You cannot begin any work in Australia until your course of study has officially commenced.
  • Working before your course start date is a direct breach of visa conditions.
